DIY Holiday Gifts For Pets

October 15, 2024

Season’s Greetings! As you conclude (or perhaps just begin) your holiday shopping, remember to include something for your pet. There are numerous possibilities for items that can be purchased in stores, but if you are an artistic kind, you may also try your hand at making your own. Read on for some DIY toy options from a local Guelph, ON vet.

Homemade Kitty Toys

Cats are normally super cute, but they are especially adorable this time of year. (They do this on purpose to ensure that we forgive them for traditional kitten holiday shenanigans like knocking over trees and pouncing on gift boxes.) Of course, our feline rulers are lovely gifts that deserve a few special treats of their own.

Here are some purrfect choices for your cat:

Catnip: Fluffy doesn’t care what shape her catnip toys are. Mice are, of course, the traditional choice here, but they are far from the only one. Regardless of the shape you choose, you will construct the toy in the same manner. Begin by cutting two pieces of material into identical shapes and sizes. Then, place one on top of the other, outsides facing in. Sew them together, leaving a little opening. Pull the material through that opening, making sure it’s facing the right way. Then, use the same opening to place catnip. You can use a little funnel or create one out of paper. When you’re finished, close the hole and sew it up.

Wand Toys: These are also quite simple to construct. Simply knot feathers and material strips together, then attach them to a string and the other end to a rope. Never leave these toys out between uses. Fluffy could become tangled if she tries to use them when you aren’t around.

Beds: If Fluffy could write down her wish list, it’s safe to assume beds would be on it. While our feline friends are not shy about making themselves at home on our laps, furniture, computers, and occasionally dishware, they do appreciate having suitable beds for all of their naps. You can create a simple bed using the same method we described in the catnip mouse section, but with larger pieces of material and a different stuffing. You may also make them from sweaters. Trim and stitch the torso into an O shape. Then, close the sleeves at the wrists. Then, stitch them onto the body. Fill the arms and body through the neck hole, then sew it closed.

Kitty Tower: Fluffy’s favorite piece of furniture is without a doubt her kitty tower. This is a fantastic time of year to get one because it may help keep your cat out of the tree. You can use an old stepladder or bookcase to accomplish this. Alternatively, build one from scratch out of lumber or PVC pipe.

Box Castle: After everyone has finished opening their gifts, this is a really fun and cute way to use all of the leftover boxes. This is also a method to capture some adorable pet photos. Simply remove any potentially dangerous items, such as ribbons, staples, and tape.

Of course, some of our feline friends will happily entertain themselves by batting about a paper ball made of wrapping paper. Kitties are gonna be kitties!

DIY Dog Toys

Entertainment and excitement are necessary for all animals, but they are especially critical for our canine friends. Fido requires plenty of toys! Playing not only keeps your pet active and moving, but it also helps to reduce boredom, which helps to minimize mischievous behavior like digging, chewing, and chasing every squirrel in sight.

It’s crucial to recognize that different toys serve different functions for our canine companions. Fido may want to snuggle up with that teddy bear at night, but he may prefer his rope toy when he wants to play. A chew toy may fulfill his desire to munch on items, whilst a puzzle toy may keep him entertained while you are at work.

Having stated that, let’s have a look at some of the options:

Rope Toy: Jeans, shirts, towels, and pillowcases are all options for materials here. Cut them into small strips. (You can use a few different colored pieces to create a lovely aesthetic, but Fido won’t care what his toy looks like.) Braid the strips together to make longer pieces. Then, braid those together. When it reaches the proper thickness, tie it off in a large knot. Done!

Muffin Fun: This one is also really simple, though it may work better as a distraction rather than a gift. You will need a muffin tray, several tennis balls, and some little treats or kibble. Place the goodies in random spaces in the muffin tin, then place the balls on top. Fido will have to get the balls out to figure out where his treats are. Just use balls that are a suitable size for your dog.

Snuffle Mats and Snuffle Balls: You would need one of those lattice-style balls, which resemble a spherical frame with holes. Then get some material. Fleece is a great alternative. You should cut your chosen material into thin strips. Then, knot the strips around the ball frame’s bars. Continue until it is completely covered. When it’s finished, stuff little bits of kibble into the knot pockets.

General Tips for Making Your Own Pet Toys

Whatever you decide to build or buy for your pet, safety should always come first. Never offer your pet something small or sharp. Ropes and cords are also dangerous, as is anything coated in a protective covering such as paint, dye, or varnish. For further information, ask your Guelph, ON veterinarian.
