Does your pet’s upcoming surgery have you feeling anxious?

Bringing a family member in for a surgical procedure is never easy. At Victoria Road Animal Hospital, we know exactly how you’re feeling because we’re pet parents too. Rest assured that we’ll do whatever it takes to ensure as stress-free an experience as possible.

Pre-Surgical Care

The surgical care at Victoria Road Animal Hospital begins with preoperative screening, which helps reduce the risk of complications for your pet. We’ll also develop a safe, effective plan to keep your pet comfortable and pain-free – before, during and following surgery.

Surgery

Whether routine or complex, your pet’s procedure will be our highest priority. From the moment you arrive on the morning of surgery, we’ll be there to ease your mind and help keep your pet calm and relaxed.

Once safely sedated, our team will complete the procedure as efficiently as possible. As the doctor works, our dedicated support staff will be present at all times, assisting with surgery and closely monitoring your pet’s wellbeing.

Common surgeries we offer in our Guelph clinic include:

  • Spay and neuter surgery
    • Dog spay and neuter
    • Cat spay and neuter
  • Lump and bump removal
  • Tumor and mass removal
  • Soft tissue surgery
  • Wound repair and stitches
  • Abscess treatment
  • Dental extractions
  • Orthopedic surgery (case-dependent, referral as needed)

After Care

When surgery is complete, your pet will be gently moved to our recovery area, where our staff will offer comfort and reassurance.

Once you arrive to pick up your pet, we will discuss our aftercare instructions, including a plan for pain management.

Surgery doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety, especially if you’ve got the experienced, compassionate team at Victoria Road Animal Hospital in your corner. Contact us today and let’s discuss how we can help with all of your companion’s surgical care needs.

Victoria Road Animal Hospital FAQs

We are here to help you with clear answers and useful information. This section covers common questions to save your time.

We only recommend surgery when it truly benefits your pet’s health and comfort. Every recommendation comes from a careful review of your pet’s exam, any necessary tests, and what might happen if we don’t operate. We’ll also discuss alternatives like medical management, monitoring, or referral if appropriate.

What you can expect:

Our team will explain your options clearly, walk you through likely outcomes, and create a plan that’s tailored to your pet. We’re here to answer your questions and help you feel confident in your decisions.

Your pet’s safety is our top priority. Modern veterinary anesthesia is very safe, and we design each plan specifically for your pet’s age, health, and needs.

Safety steps we take:

  • Pre-anesthetic exam and bloodwork
  • Customized medications and dosing
  • Continuous monitoring of heart rate, oxygen, blood pressure, temperature, and breathing
  • A caring team member watching your pet the whole time

While no procedure is risk-free, careful preparation and monitoring keep your pet as safe as possible. You can relax knowing our team is right there, every step of the way.

We’ll provide clear, written instructions for your pet, but here’s what to expect most days:

  • Fasting: No food after the night before surgery (water instructions will vary).
  • Medications: Some may need to be given or paused—only follow our directions.
  • Drop-off: Morning admission with paperwork and a quick check-in. We’ll update you once your pet is awake and comfortable.
  • Bring: Any medications, supplements, or recent records.

If your pet gets anxious or carsick, tell us! We have ways to make the day calmer and easier for them.

Costs depend on the procedure, your pet’s size, and their health needs. We provide an itemized estimate and walk you through it before surgery.

Most surgical packages include:

  • Pre-op exam and tests
  • Anesthesia and IV fluids
  • Surgical procedure and supplies
  • Pain management
  • Recovery monitoring
  • E-collar if needed

Our goal is to be transparent and supportive so you feel informed and confident.

Most pets go home the same day with pain relief and clear at-home instructions.

Recovery usually involves:

  • Restricted activity for 10–14 days (sometimes longer)
  • Wearing an e-collar or surgical suit
  • Daily incision checks

Contact us if you notice redness, swelling, discharge, bad odor, or if your pet seems unusually tired or uncomfortable. We’ll guide you through every step of recovery — our team is always just a call away.
